Photosub Annual Dinner 2016

Saturday 5th March 2016 was the occasion of our 25th Annual Dinner and was well attended with 31 members and guests (was 33 but two had to cancel due to illness). Members gathered at around 7pm and had plenty of time to mingle and enjoy a few drinks before the meal. We sat down for an enjoyable meal at around 8.15pm and after that the digital entries were projected. Our guest of honour Arthur Kingdon (with his wife Ann) attended the dinner and Arthur had judged the digital images in advance of the evening. This was no mean task as the change in categories certainly increased the overall numbers entered:

Arthur had clearly spent a lot of time and effort in his evaluation of the digital images (he received them numbered only with no authors names) and brought along envelopes with the winning images listed. After all digital images had been projected each envelope was opened in turn and the winning images were projected again in reverse order and Arthur gave a few comments on each of them.

Photosub Open Digital Images Competition 2015

A very successful evening last night at the Photosub meeting attended by 21 members and guests. We were joined by Robert and Paula Bailey who were our guests of honour and after the usual social formalities and excellent food (thanks to Pat) we projected the 42 images entered into the competition. The winners had been pre-judged by Robert and envelopes were opened in reverse order announcing the winners. The results were as follows:

Photosub BBQ and Splash-in Competition Results 2015

A most enjoyable evening was had last night by about 25 club members and guests at the Photosub BBQ, which was hosted by Martha and Anthony at their delightful house in Southampton. The weather was kind, the food was great and it was an opportunity to meet up with our friends. So special thanks to Martha and Anthony for all of their efforts.

As most of you know we had to revise the rules this year for the Splash in as club members did not manage to ‘get wet’ on the weekend of the actual Splash in. So the rules were changed this year to enable entries to be from anywhere in UK waters taken during the month of July. Even that looked shaky but by the deadline I finally received 3 images from each of 5 club members, giving us 15 images in the competition. Keeping with tradition we had a well respected photographer (who is also a photographic judge on the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain circuit), Roy Lambeth but who is not a diver.

Roy judged the images in advance and brought the results to the BBQ, accompanied by his wife, Lyn.

All images were projected twice and then the envelopes were opened to announce the winners (a bit like the Oscars!). So the results. These are as follows:

1st place Ballan Wrasse by Chris McTernan
2nd place Carp, Wraysbury Lake by Len Deeley
3rd place Swimming Crab by Chris McTernan
Highly Commended Seal with Diver by Jane Morgan

Chris won the book British Sea Fishes by Dr Frances Dipper and also a Buffalo Dry Bag. He will hold the competition trophy for one year and also gets a trophy to keep permanently. Len won a Beaver stainless steel pointer stick.

Congratulations to the winners and also to all that participated. At the end of the day we had a good quality competition.

The committee will be reviewing the Splash in rules for the future and will let you know the decision in due course.

Photosub Annual Dinner 2015

A very successful dinner last night at Farnham House Hotel. We had 33 members and guests including our guest of honour and judge for the evening Nigel Wade ARPS of Dive Magazine.

Photosub AGM – 2015

16 members and guests attended that Photosub Meeting on 31st January and was, as usual, a pleasant evening with good company, good food and drink followed by the projections of some 2014 images from Mario Vitalini, Ken Sullivan and Len Deeley. This was all preceded by the AGM.

The minutes of the 2015 AGM can be found here. The minutes also give information on various dive trips and events planned for 2015.

May I offer on the club’s behalf our thanks to Keith Lyall who has stood down as club Chairman but is continuing in the roll of Webmaster.

Photosub Digital Competition 2014

The Photosub meeting took place at Keith and Jo’s house yesterday and we had a very pleasant and successful evening with over 30 members and guests turning up.

Our thanks to Keith and Jo for hosting the evening and also providing excellent food. Also thanks to those that helped them throughout the evening.

Special thanks also has been sent to Trevor Rees who was our special guest for the evening and the judge for the Photosub Digital Photo Competition. Trevor was sent the images for judging in advance and the results were announced on the night after all of the entries were projected. 55 images were entered by 20 members. Photosub Splashin Results 2014

The club BBQ was held on Sat 16th August at Swindon Sub-Aqua Club and there was an excellent turnout of 31 members and guests. The venue was really excellent and a tribute to Gill Marsh and the other members of SSAC who have been able to have this purpose built venue developed to such a high standard. A special thanks to Gill and Andy who hosted the evening, producing really excellent food, and also thanks to James and Roger from SSAC who ran the bar and helped out with the organisation. If you get a chance I would encourage you to pay a visit to SSAC sometime as the venue is quite unique.

The guest of honour for the evening was Anna Stowe (see her own work at www.annastowephotography.com ) , with her partner Mike Buy. Anna judged the competition in advance and brought her choice of winning images in sealed envelopes. All 17 images entered by 8 club members were projected and then the envelopes were opened to announce the winners.

Photosub Annual Dinner 2014

The Photosub Annual dinner was held at the Farnham House Hotel (near Guildford). 34 club members met for drinks, socialising and a 3 course dinner. The annual competition this year was judged by Photographer and Lightroom guru, Saeed Rashid. Saeed teaches photo journalism at Bournemouth University and is himself an underwater photographer of over 13 years; he runs photo trips with Blue O2. There are 5 categories:

Photosub AGM – 2014

Approximately 20 members attended the Photosub AGM meeting on 18th Jan 2014. Reports were made by Keith Lyall (Chairman) and Kam Arya (Treasurer), followed by re-election of officers.

The AGM was followed by an excellent selection of food, and projections of video from Jo Horrocks and images from Joss Woolf and Len Deeley. Thanks to Joss for hosting the evening and slaving over the stove to provide excellent food.

Photosub digital competition 2013

This year’s digital competition contained 35 entries and was judged by Ocean Leisure Cameras‘ Dave Glanfield who sadly could not attend, but submitted very helpful feedback:

No 1 for me is without doubt image 29 (Bob Soames). I love the composition; the eel’s markings echoing the sand dune ridges, somewhat reminiscent of the sandworm in the 80’s movie Beetlejuice. The use of one strobe lifting the subject from the background, two strobes would have left it flat. Perfect sharpness and exposure of an interesting subject not normally seen like this – love it.

No 2 is image 17 (Wendy Eve). A classic shot beautiful composed and exposed. It must have taken a lot of patience to get this shot of these feisty little beasts.

No 3 is Image 27 (Bob Soames). This has a certain feel about it, which is hard to pinpoint. It’s such a clean photo with the background bleeding beautifully around the subject into the foreground. The exposure is absolutely spot on and if this image has been tweaked in Photoshop it’s been done beautifully covertly.

Special mention. Image 5 (Joss Woolf). I really love this photo. I see countless underwater images and rarely see one that makes me sit up and take notice. This is such a quirky photo with great composition.

Special mention. Image 6 (Joss Woolf). I really like the texture of this image along with its symmetry, it’s very appealing.
